The State of Carbon Dioxide Removal (2023)

The first global assessment of the state of carbon dioxide removal and the gap we need to close. The focus of our work has been on co-designing the visual identity of the research project and the signature visualisations for the executive summary.

This report, published in 2023, is the first comprehensive global assessment of the current state of Carbon Dioxide Removal.

Scientific reports often treat communication as an afterthought, with a focus on separate outputs. However, for this project, Exalt Editing proposed a collaborative approach to narrative-building for science with real-world impact, demonstrating exceptional strategic communication.

The work was planned to ensure a deep collaboration between communicators and content experts to co-develop how scientific knowledge would be created and shared.

The team at Exalt Editing has provided project coordination, story-building and editing for the entire report and appointed InfoDesignLab as a partner for the co-creation of the visual identity of the whole project as well as the co-design of the signature visualisations published in the executive summary.

We have facilitated the co-design process ensuring maximum space for dialogue, conversations and feedback.

The project has been devised and convened by researchers Oliver Geden (German Institute for International and Security Affairs, SWP), Jan Minx (Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change, (MCC), Berlin), Gregory Nemet (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Stephen M Smith (University of Oxford). Each are leading academics in the field of CDR, lead investigators within major CDR assessment projects, and IPCC authors.
