This Is Open Schooling

A visual narrative co-created together with the scientists who led SEAS, a EU-funded project on Science Education for Action and Engagement Towards Sustainability. The goal of the narrative is to convey a high-level summary of a large amount of data as an engaging visual journey, capturing the gist of the whole research project.

The main objective of the Science Education for Action and Engagement Towards Sustainability (SEAS) has been to establish, coordinate and evaluate collaboration among six open schooling networks in Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and the UK. SEAS networks consisted of partners with extensive experience in cooperation across formal, non-formal, and informal science education. In addition to researchers and local schools, the network included out-of-school centers, civil society organizations, and small and medium-sized enterprises.

The work led by InfoDesignLab together with all the partners consisted of facilitating the transition from the data collected at a local level by the seven countries to a high-level global narrative.

One of the results of the co-design process was This is Open Schooling, a data story to engage school teachers in the findings of SEAS.

The data story has been the result of collaborative efforts from information designers, scientists, UX/UI designers, developers, science writers and users. Together, we have worked on defining the tone of voice, crafting the wording, selecting the data, designing the visualisations, and setting a visual language. These efforts have evolved over many iterations, with ongoing input and feedback from the different stakeholders involved.
